What is Descript?

Descript was founded in 2017 by Andrew Mason (previously of Groupon and the audio-tour app Detour) around one observation: for spoken-word content, the transcript is the edit map. Instead of scrubbing waveforms on a timeline, Descript shows your recording as a document. Cut a rambling paragraph by selecting and deleting text. Rearrange sections by dragging paragraphs. The timeline still exists for fine work — layering, music, captions, animations — but for the 80% of editing that is deciding what stays and what goes, text is simply a faster interface.
