About Upwork

Upwork, in 30 seconds

Upwork is the largest freelance marketplace in the world by listing volume and active users, with millions of freelancers covering essentially every digital service category. We picked it because if you need a freelance researcher, voiceover artist, Webflow developer, podcast editor and Power BI consultant in the same week, Upwork is the only platform that has all five at sensible prices. The headline weakness is that the marketplace is huge and the median quality is mid; the strength is that you can filter aggressively by hourly rate, hours billed, success score and Top Rated badges and end up with a usable shortlist quickly.

How it works

You post a job, set a budget (hourly band or fixed price), and freelancers apply by spending Connects (lead credits). You shortlist, interview inside Upwork chat or Zoom, and start a contract. Hourly contracts use Upwork's Work Diary screenshot tracker every 10 minutes, which protects you against billing fraud; fixed-price contracts use milestone escrow. Upwork handles invoicing, taxes (W-8BEN/W-9), and payments in 80+ currencies. Talent Scout is a managed-recruiter overlay where Upwork curates a shortlist for you at a higher fee. Enterprise plans add classification compliance and a dedicated CSM.

Pricing reality

Clients pay a flat 5% marketplace fee on top of the freelancer's contract value. Optional tiers: Marketplace Plus at $20/month adds extra hires and one-month payment terms, and Business at custom pricing adds tracking, classification and consolidated invoicing. Freelancer fees are 10% of contract value, replacing the older sliding 5/10/20% structure. Talent Scout managed engagements typically carry a separate placement fee. There is no platform fee on top of the freelancer rate other than the 5%, which means a $50/hour engineer costs you $52.50/hour, all-in.

Upwork vs alternatives

MarketplacePricingBest for
UpworkFree + 5% client feeBroadest category coverage at every price point
FiverrProject-based + 5.5% feeProductised "gigs" with fixed deliverables
Toptal50%+ managed marginPre-vetted top 3% with managed match
MaltFree + ~10% marginSenior European freelance tech and consulting
Contra0% commissionIndependents who want zero platform tax

Decision matrix

  • Buy if: you need to fill multiple freelance categories from one platform, you can interview properly, and you can use filters (Top Rated Plus, success score over 95%, hours billed) to cut through volume.
  • Wait if: you only need one productised deliverable; Fiverr is faster and cheaper for that.
  • Skip if: you only want pre-vetted top-1% senior talent and a managed match; Toptal or Malt Strategy will save you the screening time.

Frequently asked

How much does Upwork charge clients?
A flat 5% marketplace fee on contract value, on top of whatever the freelancer charges.
Is the freelancer fee 20%?
No. The old 5/10/20% sliding scale was replaced. Freelancers now pay a flat 10% of contract value.
Can I hire on a fixed price?
Yes. Fixed-price contracts use milestone-based escrow; you fund a milestone, the freelancer delivers, you release.
What protects me against fraud on hourly contracts?
The Work Diary takes screenshots and counts keystrokes/mouse activity every 10 minutes, and Upwork Hourly Protection guarantees payment correctness on tracked time.
What is Upwork Talent Scout?
A managed-recruiter overlay where Upwork curates a shortlist of vetted freelancers for you at a higher fee.
Can I hire someone off-platform after meeting on Upwork?
Not for the first 24 months without paying a conversion fee. Upwork's ToS enforces this.
