About TestRail

TestRail, in 30 seconds

TestRail is the long-running standard for test case management — organising test cases, planning runs, tracking pass/fail results, and reporting QA metrics to engineering leadership. It is what most enterprise QA teams move to once spreadsheets break.

You get hierarchical test suites, milestones, configurations, traceability to Jira tickets, and a REST API for hooking automation results into the same dashboards as manual runs.

How it actually works

You define test cases (steps, expected results, preconditions) inside projects. For each release, create a test plan with one or more runs — a run is a snapshot of cases assigned to testers. As they execute, they mark each case passed, failed, or blocked, log defects to Jira, and TestRail tracks progress and quality metrics.

Automation results push in via the REST API or one of the framework integrations (JUnit, TestNG, pytest, Cypress). Reports cover pass rates, defect density, milestone progress, and per-tester productivity.

Pricing reality

Professional Cloud at $37/user/month (annual) covers most teams. Enterprise Cloud at $74/user/month adds SSO, audit logs, and priority support. Server (self-hosted) is also available on perpetual or annual licensing — useful for regulated industries that cannot use SaaS.

Per-user pricing adds up fast. A 30-person QA org on Professional is around $13,300/year. Compare to Xray (Jira plug-in, often cheaper) or Zephyr Scale before committing.

Who should buy it

Buy if

  • You have a dedicated QA team running structured manual tests
  • You need per-release traceability and audit-friendly reporting
  • You blend manual exploration with automation in one dashboard
  • You are outgrowing spreadsheets or homegrown trackers

Skip if

  • You are 100% automated with no manual QA workflow
  • Your team lives in Jira and Xray or Zephyr Scale would be cheaper
  • You are a small startup — a Notion or spreadsheet works longer than you think
  • You need BDD-first tooling (look at qTest or Cucumber Studio)

Frequently asked

Does TestRail integrate with Jira?
Yes — bidirectional sync, defect linking, and traceability between test cases and Jira tickets are built in.
Can I run automation results through TestRail?
Yes. Push results via the REST API or use one of the JUnit, pytest, Cypress, or TestNG integrations.
Self-hosted or cloud?
Both. Cloud (SaaS) is most common; Server is for teams with regulatory or air-gapped requirements.
How is TestRail different from Xray?
Xray lives inside Jira and is cheaper for Atlassian-centric teams. TestRail is standalone, with deeper reporting and a more complete domain model.
Is there a free version?
No free tier, but a 30-day free trial of the Cloud product. Server has a perpetual licence model on top of an annual maintenance fee.
Does it support BDD or Gherkin?
Yes, you can store BDD scenarios as test cases. Dedicated BDD tools like qTest or Cucumber Studio offer richer behaviour-driven workflows.
