About NetSuite

NetSuite, in 30 seconds

NetSuite is Oracle's cloud ERP — financials, CRM, inventory, e-commerce, and project management all on a single data model. It is the default upgrade path for companies outgrowing QuickBooks or Xero, and the standard target for venture-backed companies preparing for an IPO. It is also genuinely complex; this is a project, not a sign-up.

How it actually works

NetSuite ships as a SaaS suite with a configurable data model. Implementation is led by Oracle or — more often — a NetSuite Solution Provider. Modules are switched on as needed: General Ledger, AR, AP, Fixed Assets, Revenue Recognition (ASC 606), Multi-book, Inventory, Manufacturing, OneWorld for multi-subsidiary, and more.

Customisation goes deep through SuiteScript and SuiteFlow. Integrations are usually built with the SuiteCloud platform or via Celigo, Boomi, or Workato.

Pricing reality

NetSuite is sold on a base licence plus per-user fees plus per-module fees. A typical small deployment — basic financials, ten users, single entity — runs around $35,000 to $50,000 per year. Multi-entity, multi-currency, with revenue recognition and inventory, is more like $100,000 to $250,000 per year.

Implementation by a partner is usually 0.8x to 1.5x year-one licence cost. Three-year terms are standard. Discounting is meaningful only at quarter and year-end.

How it compares

NetSuite$35k to $250k+Mid-market, multi-entity, IPO-bound
Sage Intacct$15k to $80kMid-market financials, weaker on inventory
Microsoft Dynamics 365 BC$25k to $100kMicrosoft-shop SMBs
Xero or QuickBooks$200 to $2,000Sub-$10m revenue businesses

Who should buy it

Pick NetSuite if you have outgrown Xero or QuickBooks (multi-entity, multi-currency, real inventory, ASC 606 revenue recognition), or you are venture-backed and preparing for IPO scrutiny. Skip it if you are under $10m revenue and single-entity — you will pay for capability you do not use, and the implementation will be painful.

Frequently asked

Is NetSuite right for a 20-person company?
Usually no — Xero, QuickBooks, or Sage Intacct will deliver 80% of the value at a tenth of the cost. NetSuite makes sense once you have multi-entity needs or are preparing for institutional scrutiny.
How much does implementation really cost?
Plan on 0.8x to 1.5x your first-year licence fee for a partner-led implementation. DIY implementations almost always end badly.
Can I leave once I am on it?
Yes, but the migration off NetSuite is significant — most companies stay for the long term.
Does it handle UK statutory reporting?
Yes, including MTD VAT, with the Localisation SuiteApp.
How does it compare to Sage Intacct?
Intacct is stronger in pure financials and cheaper. NetSuite wins on inventory, e-commerce, and multi-entity. Choose by which capability matters most.
Are there cheaper alternatives for IPO prep?
Sage Intacct can pass IPO scrutiny in some sectors. NetSuite is still the safer default for VC-backed software companies.
