What Nelio Content actually does

Nelio Content is a WordPress plugin — its full name on the repository is "Nelio Content – Editorial Calendar & Social Media Auto-Posting" — and that name is an accurate description of the job. It puts a proper editorial calendar inside wp-admin, then automatically promotes what you publish across your social accounts, on a schedule you define once and largely stop thinking about.

The distinction that matters: this is not a WordPress connector bolted onto an external social tool. Everything lives in your own site. Your calendar, your drafts, your task assignments, your queued social messages and your analytics all sit in the same database as your content, behind the same login. That evergreen re-sharing is the feature most people underestimate. Publishing is easy; the hard part is that nobody sees anything you wrote before this month. The paid tiers differ mainly on scale rather than features. Basic covers one site with basic automations. Standard covers up to three sites with five automation groups. Plus covers up to ten sites with ten automation groups. All three unlock the full premium set — Content Board, editorial tasks and comments, Series, Task Presets, Future Actions, user notifications, automatic social sharing, recurring messages and reshare messages — and all three connect 15 social profiles per site.

If you run client sites, the maths is obvious: Plus at ten sites is the tier that turns this from a personal tool into agency infrastructure. Paying yearly saves a further 20% before your coupon is applied.

How well maintained is it?

This is the question that decides whether a WordPress plugin is safe to build a workflow on, and Nelio answers it well. It has been on the WordPress repository since July 2016 — nine years — and the current release, version 4.3.8, shipped in July 2026. It is tested against WordPress 7.0.2 and requires WordPress 6.7 and PHP 7.4 or newer, which tells you the team tracks core releases rather than letting compatibility drift.

User sentiment is solid: 4.4 out of 5 from 104 reviews, with 85 of those being five stars, and it has been downloaded 577,187 times. Be realistic about scale, though — roughly 4,000 active installs makes this a well-regarded niche tool, not a market giant. There are also ten one-star reviews in that mix. A small, actively-maintained plugin from a focused team is a perfectly reasonable bet, but it is a different risk profile from installing something with a million users.

Who should skip it

If your content does not live on WordPress, none of this applies — there is no standalone app. If you need to manage social accounts that have nothing to do with your blog, a dedicated scheduler like Buffer will serve you better; Nelio's model is content-first, with social as the amplifier. And if you publish once a month, the free tier is almost certainly enough.

It earns its price when you are publishing regularly, coordinating more than one person, or running several sites — the point at which a spreadsheet plus manual social posting starts quietly costing you hours every week.
