About Jira

Jira, in 30 seconds

Jira is Atlassian's issue tracker turned full agile delivery platform. We picked it because it remains the default for engineering organisations that need real sprint mechanics, dependency tracking and reporting that survives audit. The trade-off is honest: Jira rewards teams that invest in configuration and punishes those that do not. Used badly it becomes an admin tax; used well it is the spine of how software actually ships.

How it works

You create a project, pick a template (Scrum, Kanban, bug tracking, service management) and start filing issues. Each issue moves through a workflow you can edit per project, with screens, fields and permissions configurable to taste. Boards visualise sprints or continuous flow; the backlog handles grooming, estimation and capacity. Atlassian Intelligence now drafts summaries, suggests fields and rewrites tickets, though it is not a substitute for product judgement.

Above the project layer sit Plans (formerly Advanced Roadmaps) for cross-team scheduling, automation rules for routine workflow nudges, and tight integration with Confluence for documentation, Bitbucket or GitHub for code links and Compass for service catalogues. Reporting includes burndown, velocity, cumulative flow, control charts and cycle time, all configurable per board.

Pricing reality

Jira Cloud has four tiers. Free covers up to 10 users with limited automation and storage. Standard runs around $7.53 per user per month and unlocks more storage, audit logs and project roles. Premium roughly doubles that to about $13.53 per user per month and adds Plans, sandbox, release tracks and 24/7 support. Enterprise is annual-only and quoted, typically landing for organisations with 800+ users that need cross-site analytics, data residency controls and unlimited automation.

The honest cost watch: many teams underestimate the price of Premium until they need Plans for real cross-squad scheduling. Add Confluence, Atlassian Intelligence credits and the full marketplace app stack and a 100-person engineering org can sit at $20-25 per user per month all in.

Buy if / skip if

Buy if you

  • Run multiple engineering squads that need shared roadmaps, dependencies and release tracking.
  • Need an audit trail for regulated software (finance, health, public sector).
  • Already use Confluence or Bitbucket and want one identity, billing and permission model.

Skip if you

  • Run a small product team that prizes speed over process — Linear is a better fit.
  • Need a single tool for non-technical work too; ClickUp or Asana feel less alien to marketing and ops.
  • Cannot commit a Jira admin role; the configuration debt compounds quickly without one.

Free covers 10 users indefinitely, which is enough for a single squad or a pilot. Step up to Standard or Premium when you need Plans, audit logs or automation headroom.

Frequently asked

Is Jira free for small teams?
Yes. The Free plan supports up to 10 users with limited storage, automation runs and no audit log. It is a real plan, not a 30-day trial.
How does Jira compare with Linear?
Linear is faster, prettier and opinionated; Jira is broader, configurable and audit-friendly. Most product-led startups prefer Linear; most enterprises stay on Jira.
Do I need Confluence as well?
No, but Atlassian designs them to plug together. If your team writes specs and runbooks, the bundle is usually worth it; if not, stick to Jira plus a separate doc tool.
What is Atlassian Intelligence?
It is the AI layer baked into Jira and Confluence — ticket summaries, smart fields, draft generation and natural-language search. Available across paid plans with usage caps.
Can Jira run service desks too?
Yes — Jira Service Management is the same platform with ITSM templates, queues, SLAs and a customer portal. It is a separate product line with its own pricing.
Is there a self-hosted version?
Atlassian retired Jira Server. Self-hosting is now only via Jira Data Center, an enterprise-only tier with annual licensing.
