About Evernote

Evernote, in 30 seconds

Evernote is the original note-taking app — the elephant logo, the green icon, the home of the web clipper that taught a generation what bookmarking should be. We picked it because for users with deep historical libraries, the search across text, PDFs and image OCR is genuinely useful, and the web clipper is still one of the cleanest in the category. The trade-off is honest: ownership has changed twice (Bending Spoons now runs it), the free tier was severely cut in 2023, and modern challengers — Notion, Obsidian, Apple Notes — eat into the market with stronger collaboration or local-first stories.

How it works

You capture notes in rich text, attach images, audio or PDFs, and organise into notebooks or stacks. The web clipper saves articles, screenshots or simplified pages from the browser straight into a chosen notebook. Search runs across note text, attachment text and OCR'd images — find a recipe in a photo of a cookbook page, or a phrase inside a saved PDF.

Tasks live alongside notes with due dates and reminders; calendar integration shows events in the sidebar. AI features added in recent years include summarisation, brainstorming prompts and inline writing help, though they trail dedicated AI note tools. Apps cover macOS, Windows, iOS, Android and the web; sync is reliable across them.

Pricing reality

Three tiers: Free, Personal and Professional, plus a Teams tier. Free is now strictly limited — 50 notes, one notebook, basic features only. Personal at around $14.99 per month or $129.99 annually unlocks unlimited notes, notebooks, offline access on mobile and richer search. Professional at roughly $17.99 per month adds task assignment, advanced search filters, deeper Outlook and Google Calendar integration and custom templates. Teams is quoted and aimed at small businesses.

The honest cost watch: at $130 a year, Evernote Personal sits at the top end of consumer note-taking. Notion Plus, Apple Notes (free with iCloud) and Obsidian Sync all undercut it. The premium is justifiable only if you genuinely use the web clipper, OCR search and existing library.

Frequently asked

What did the 2023 free-tier change actually do?
The free tier dropped from generous limits to 50 notes, 1 notebook and basic features only — making it largely a trial of paid tiers.
Who owns Evernote now?
Bending Spoons, an Italian software company, acquired Evernote in 2022 from a previous owner. Several rounds of layoffs and roadmap shifts followed.
Can I export my notes if I leave?
Yes. Evernote supports export to ENEX (its own format) and HTML. Migration tools exist for moving to Notion, Obsidian, Apple Notes and Joplin.
Is Evernote still actively developed?
Yes. Bending Spoons has shipped UI updates, AI features and pricing changes; pace is closer to maintenance plus targeted improvements rather than aggressive expansion.
How does Evernote compare with Notion?
Evernote excels at capture, OCR and search; Notion excels at structured documents, databases and team collaboration. Many users keep Evernote for capture and Notion for output.
What about Obsidian or Apple Notes?
Obsidian is local-first, Markdown-based and free for personal use. Apple Notes is free with iCloud and increasingly capable on Apple devices. Pick by where your work actually lives.
